What is a domain name?

A domain name is an Internet address (example: some-company.com). This is the convention used to access a web site. Many people use domain names to promote their business.

How do I add records on my ns1.minivds.com, ns2.minivds.com servers?

ISPmanager simplifies adding any number of master or slave (secondary) DNS domains for a server. It can chain to another instantiation of itself on another server, so that after adding the master records, it can automatically add slave records.

What are Private Name Servers?

Private name servers would be ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. For ns2.yourdomain.com the ip would be assigned unique ip. Note that registrating private nameservers, you make yourname.minivds.com domains not available.

I already have a domain name; how do I renew it at MiniVDS.com?

When you register a domain at MiniVDS.com, your account is set to Auto Renew by default, meaning your domain registration will automatically renew using your credit card information on file. You can turn off Auto Renew. When your domain is close to expiring, you will be notified at your e-mail address on file.

What are WWW domains, mail domains, domain names in the ISPmanager Control Panel?

When your account is created a few things happen: The WWW domain (Virtual domain) is created on the server. Your domain is entered into our DNS. A Virtual Mail domain is created in the Mail server.
When you add records into 'WWW domains', ISPmanager automatically creates the records in "Domain names'.

I already have a domain. How can I host it at my server?

If you've registered your domain name through another Registrar, but have wisely chosen us as your hosting company, we'll help you to update your DNS information. There are two ways to get your domain hosted at MiniVDS.com:
#1. You can use our nameservers. Submit a Domain Name System (DNS) modification request to the company that registered your domain name and provide MiniVDS's Primary and Secondary Name Server Information (ns1.minivds.com and ns2.minivds.com).
In case you use the service 'Private Name Servers', provide your registrar with your servers information (ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com) and their IP ddresses.
#2. If you've chosen a third-party DNS server and do not want to host your domain at our nameservers, you can add the appropriate records into your DNS pointing to your web-server ip.

How do I transfer my domain name to MiniVDS.com from another registrar?

When transferring a .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, or .us domain to MiniVDS.com, the customer will need to contact the registrar for a change of ownership and confirm the transfer with a confirmation code. This is a code that is generated by the system and emailed within approximately 24 hours of the transfer request submission to the administrative contact on the domain registration information (as per WHOIS data). The confirmation code will generally be a six or seven digit number - ensure that you have not added any spaces when you submit the code or you may receive an error.

What are DNS record types?

The DNS (Domain Name System) records control the functionality of domain names. Each registered domain name has a DNS record. The DNS record is made of sub records including MX, A, and CNAME.
A, or address, records describe the IP that a given DNS node has.
CNAME records are "canonical name" records. DNS allows machines to have a true (canonical name), as well as an unlimited number of aliases.
MX, or mail exchange, records describe the machines to contact in order to send mail to a given DNS node. An MX-record identifies the name of a mail server server - not the IP-address. Because of this, it is important that an A-record for the referenced mail server exists (not necessarily on your server, but wherever it belongs), otherwise there may not be any way to find that mail server and communicate with it.
TXT, or text, records are arbitrary text strings which can be attached to given DNS nodes. Certain protocols, such as SPF, use this field to store protocol-specific data.
SRV records are used to specify the location of a service.

How can I create third or higher level subdomain?

As long as you have an existing domain (yourdomain.com) hosted on our servers, you can host other-level domains (anyname.yourdomain.com). Subdomains, or third-level domains, are treated just like any other domain. The procedure of the subdomans creation is the same - once you've created them in 'WWW domains', the DNS records will be added automatically into 'Domain Names'.
