This page compares the features and performance of the virtualization technologies VDSmanager and OpenVZ available for Linux and FreeBSD.

Disk space

VDSmanager FileSystem (vdsfs) consists of user files and disk templates. On a user level the filesystem content is displayed in block. With such files organization, it is advantageous to provide a wide range of pre-installed software that will not take up any memory. But, here are also templates including only an operating system.

With OpenVZ it is not possible to distinguish between files belonging to a "user" and files belonging to a "disk template". When a VPS account is created, all the files in the template directory are copied to the new home directory. These files will be included into the VPS disk quota and our tech support team will not be able to update this software for the server administrators.

RAM memory

VDSmanager displays resource RAM memory utilization in real-time. This is a way to economize allocated RAM and increase web server stability.

In case of OpenVZ - memory accounting occurs by quantity of the "requested" or allocated memory, which means that RAM requested by an application considered as used. The system would start becoming unstable if you go over your RAM limit and start killing off processes.

OpenVZ is especially sensitive to the performance of storage- and memory-intensive user applications. While using the VDSmanager (FreeBSD) virtualization system, a user can solve or even avoid the memory organization and optimization problems.

FreeBSD vs Linux

You should choose a FreeBSD-based VPS if you're not a big fan of running Linux on your computer, and have no Linux experience. Their products are quite solid, but Linux is still not the ideal OS for hosting most sites. And it's also not the most suitable OS for mail servers.

You should choose a Linux-based VPS if you're going to use software not compatible with FreeBSD (Important: You can run Linux applications under FreeBSD by using the VDSmanager tool linux-compat), or make a VPN connection to server through PPP.

How to change OS?

Since FreeBSD and Linux based servers are hosted on different hardware platforms, a user cannot reinstall FreeBSD OS after using Linux, and vice versa.
First you will have to cancel your account, and then order new VPS specifying what software you want preistalled.
